The question everyone wants to ask.
How much is all this exotic overseas travel going to cost the Poppetville family?
Well, you know that we did not win the lotto and that it is cheaper than staying here in Australia leading a normal suburban-style life.
This section is pretty much the first part of any travel blog I try to read, call it curiosity, but I am trying to convince myself that we can do this. With this amount of money.
I thought I'd share the gory details of our own plans.
For the first 12 months we do not want to work. At. All.
We need the break to relax, find ourselves, reconnect to who we are and what we believe in.
After that we will investigate starting a location independent business. Or something else might tweak our interest in our initial year of exploring.
First up, we are off to Asia. Many countries in Asia are cheap to travel in and we will stay here from 6-12 months at this stage.
In an older post I provided links to apartments and costs to illustrate examples of that.
So we are budgeting the following based on previous travels in Asia and reading other people's budget breakdowns:
Accommodation: $1000.00 per month.
We plan to stay in cheaper hotels or apartments and stay in one place for 30+ days to gain long stay rates.
Food: $1000.00 per month ($33 per day)
We will just eat breakfast at home; fruit/ yoghurt and then eat two meals and snacks out.
This will include all tours, scooter/car hire if we want it for a day or two, tuk-tuk/ taxi/ song thaew rides, boat trips, internal airfares.
In Asia this will include massages, new clothes and shoes if needed, medicines, sunscreen.
I think that pretty much covers it. Not included in our above monthly costs are international travel insurance and visas, we estimate that these will add up to another $500 max a month.
In fact, we will have a rather large slush fund for Asia, as I tend to over budget for everything.
Total: $4000 per month
$48,000 per year
$131.50 per day
What do you think?
We will be off to Europe after Asia and realise that cost of living is more expensive than that there.
But we plan on staying in Eastern Europe for just as much, if not more, time as Western Europe which will bring down the average monthly cost over the course of 1-2 years.
We also will travel in Western Europe during the off-seasons and stay in more hostels, camp grounds and long term apartments/houses.
In Europe we will stay longer in apartments, eat out less often and we have vague plans about buying a caravan and car or a tent.
I love the romance of these tents for the European Summer. Bernie is not so sure...
Hope this gives you an insight in to what and how we are doing this trip.
